Walkthrough 001: getting the lamp

Link's house
Your first task, as assigned by your uncle, is to infiltrate the guardhouse. However, the soldiers won't let you through. It seems your only way is through the caves north of Kakariko village which are rumoured to be dark and dangerous. Before entering these caves, we need to shed some light to the situation.

The lamp is the first item you need to get in order to proceed in the game. In the original A Link To The Past, the lamp was inside a chest in Link's house. In Parallel Worlds it is hidden elsewhere and the game starts with this very first challenge. So let's get cracking.




Intersection
First leave the house and head north until you reach the intersection road sign (it's at the entrance of Kakariko village). Head east at this sign and follow the road passing the village cemetery. Dodge the guards if you want or attack them with the bushes you can pick up along the way. They require two hits to be killed and rarely drop any items at this point. You lose a full heart when being hit by them, so be cautious!

At the end of the village cemetery you'll find another sign. Take the path east on the upper level and follow the path that leads to the church. Get inside and get the first heart container from the south-east corner of the room. You have four hearts now, which is really not a bad idea before proceeding.

Leave the church and jump down from the ledge. You will reach the cave entrance.

From now on you really need to be careful. Even more so than you already were. As you may have noticed, you can't save your game, at least not by using the conventional in-game method. Saving will only be enabled when you obtain your sword and shield at the far end of the guardhouse, which happens to be your goal. So be careful, or you will have to restart from Link's house each time you die.

If you are using a game emulator that supports save game states, it will help you out. Also the support for Game Genie or Pro Action Replay is pretty helpful. However, I do not encourage its use until you have beaten the game at least once.

Now, let's enter the cave.

Notice the big block in the room. You need to get to the other side of it. Head up the entrance to the north. The foe you are facing now doesn't appear in the original game until you get the arrows. Right now you have ... nothing. Probably the best way to avoid this creep is to run as fast as you can and most preferably before he wakes up. Run to the passage west of you and still beware of the redhead following your tracks. Head south and enter the doorway.

Beware of the shooting tile and enter the doorway at the bottom of the room. Follow the pathway and pick up the pots you find along the way. Walk past the exit door (do not jump or fall down!) and dodge the bats or throw pots at them. The chest in the south-west corner holds the lamp. Now exit the cave through the south doorway.

See, that wasn't so hard after all, was it? Let's proceed to the caves.
